Messing about on the river...

The 2010 Charity Dragon Boat Challenge at Halton Army Training Camp proved to be a roaring success, as 20 Dragon Boat Challenge 2010crews paddled their hearts out to support North West Air Ambulance charity and other Lunesdale Rotary Club local charities.

After early rain the weather began to clear and the crews headed out two-by-two for their first heats, hoping to record the fastest times and get into the finals.

Despite the uncertain weather the atmosphere was carnival, with team gazebos, bbqs and dragon boat flags flying and the many stalls and attractions along the riverside just added to the occasion. The climbing wall and bouncy castles proved a big hit with all ages and the Rotary Club made sure there was something for everyone.

The NWAA teams were hard to miss in their bright yellow t.shirts, but they were a perfect match for the charity helicopter which made an appearance around noon.  Although the helicopter and crew could only manage a flying visit they still managed to stay around long enough to give many the opportunity to see the service in action and to take the opportunity for a quick photo-call.

As the afternoon progressed and the crews got quicker, the team pulled together to complete the challenge.

As everyone was quick to agree it was a tremendous event and over £10,000 was raised on the day.

Well done to everyone who 'splashed out'.. and thank you for your support.

If you didn't manage to take part in this year's event, but like the idea of getting a team together - why not get started early and put your name down for next year? Contact the fundraising office on 0151 547 7830 and ask for details on the Dragon Boat Challenge 2011.
