In 2004 the charity identified the need to upgrade the ageing Bolkow 105 aircraft that was in operation.
We needed to raise an additional £500,000 to be able to upgrade to a state of the art EC 135 T2 and set an 18 month timeline in which to raise the funds, followed by a further 18 months time period to commission the building of a new aircraft, and in October 2004 an appeal was launched.
In December 2005 the North West Air Ambulance was able to commission a brand new aircraft thanks to the executors of the estate of the late Katie Caine from Thornton Cleveleys.
We were fortunate enough to be gifted the full £500,000 by our benefactor and it is with thanks to the executors or her estate that the aircraft was named ‘Katie’ in her honor.
Reverend Ken Clapham performed an official naming ceremony held at Blackpool International Airport in December 2005

I have recently witnessed the excellent work that the North west Air Ambulance does. As a Community First Responder, it was brilliant to see how they operate.
